MHS Sports Report – 2/1/16

The Winter Season is starting to wind down and teams are beginning to start the IHSAA tournament series.

The Girls Basketball Team played twice last week.  On Thursday, they hosted Terre Haute South in their last home game.  The Lady Pioneers played great in the 2nd and 3rd quarter and won the game 75-49.  Then on Friday night, they traveled to Whiteland for their last regular season and conference game.  The girls battled the entire game and forced OT with a last second 3-point basket by Taylor Baxter.  However, in overtime, Whiteland was a little too strong and defeated the Lady Pioneers 57-61.  The Girls finished with a 17-6 record on the season going into Sectionals.  Tomorrow night, the Lady Pioneers open up with Plainfield in the first round of Sectionals.  This game will start at 6:00pm and will be played at Brownsburg HS.

The Boys Basketball Team played on Friday and Saturday night.  On Friday, they traveled to Whiteland as part of a Boy/Girl doubleheader.  The Warriors rallied in the 4th quarter to take the game 67-61.  On Saturday, the Pioneers were back at home against Connersville.  The team had a strong 2nd half to pull away and take the win 53-26.  This night was also the Champions Together Night and featured a Unified Basketball game during halftime.  Led by Maddie Vauters and Mrs. Selby, the school raised over $3000 for Special Olympics Indiana.  Thank you to the fans and businesses that help support this great organization.  This week, the Boys are off with Girls Basketball Sectionals. The Pioneers will pick back up on the 9th when they host Bloomington North.

The Pioneer Wrestling Team hosted and participated in the IHSAA Sectional this past Saturday.  Advancing to Regionals were:  Spencer Cox (113), Ethan Wymer (120), and Jake Hawkins (145).  The team finished 8th in a very strong tournament.  The three wrestlers will compete next Saturday at home starting at 9:00am.

The Boys/Girls Swimming and Diving Teams competed twice last week.  On Tuesday, they hosted South Putnam for Senior Night.  The Boys won 112-62 with strong performances by all the seniors.  The Girls lost 73-99 that night but had a good performance by lone senior Haley Wilson.  On Thursday both teams hosted Whiteland.  The Girls competed well but came up short.  The Boys meet was very close and came down to the last event.  Unfortunately Whiteland came out on top 91-88.  This week the Boys will travel to Beech Grove for a 3-way meet.  The Girls will be swimming in the Sectional at Franklin on Thursday and Saturday.  The Prelim races will start at 6:00pm on Thursday night.

Here is the school for entire week.  Week of February 1
