MHS Sports Report – 2/8/16
A few of the Winter Sports have completed their seasons.
The Girls Basketball opened Sectionals this past week with a very tough Plainfield team. After being down double digit points most of the game, the Lady Pioneers rallied back in the 4th quarter to cut the lead to 3. However, after two big 3-point shots by the Quakers, they were able to separate themselves and win the game. The loss brought an end to the season. The Lady Pioneers finished with a 17-7.
The Boys/Girls Swimming and Diving teams competed last week. The Boys participated in a 3-way meet against Beech Grove and Cascade on Tuesday. The Pioneers finished 2nd and strong performances from: Nick Phillips, Ashton Johnson, Thomas Weber, Jake Perkins, Noah Wheele and Nathaniel Snyder. They are now off until Sectionals on the 18th. The Girls competed in Sectionals on Thursday and Saturday. Many of the Lady Pioneers swam personal bests to end their season. One of the swimmers that performed very well was Julia LeBlanc. She broke the school record in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 27.07 in the preliminary race on Thursday. On Saturday, she finished 14th in the 50 Free and 16th in the 100 Free. The 200 Free Relay team finished 8th and 400 Free Relay team finished 9th. The Lady Pioneers had a much improved season from previous years.
Two MHS Wrestlers competed at the IHSAA Regional on Saturday. Spencer Cox finished 4th and will advance to the Semi-State next Saturday at Ford Arena in Evansville. Jake Hawkins also competed at Regionals but came up short in his first round match. He wrestled well but lost 2-4 in overtime in the opening round. Semi-State will begin at 9:00am CST. Spencer will have to win his first two matches to advance to the State Finals.
The Boys Basketball team was off last week and will resume games this week. On Tuesday, they will host Bloomington North and then on Friday will host Martinsville. This Friday will also be the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction. It should be an exciting night at MHS.
