The Mooresville Pioneers (1-8) went to Beech Grove (4-5) on Friday night and walked away with their first win of 2017 in the final regular season game of the year, 17-12. The win was an entire team effort from the opening kick off to the final play of the ball game. The Pioneers started off the scoring when Pioneers Kicker Jake Wallman hit from 23 yards out to give Mooresville a first quarter lead, 3-0.
Mooresville tacked on 7 more at the 4:21 mark of the second quarter when James Mabry scored from 5 yards out (PAT- Wallman) giving the Pioneers a 10-0 halftime lead. The lone score of the third quarter came when Hornets Quarterback Jordan Reel scored from 2 yards out (2 Point Conversion Failed) to pull within 4 an the end of the third quarter, 10-6. Mooresville answered on the very first play from scrimmage in the fourth quarter when James Mabry cashed in form 14 yards out (PAT Wallman) to put the Pioneers up 17-6 with 11:53 remaining in the game.
On the next possession the Hornets took over on their own 28 yard line and proceeded to turn the ball over as Quarterback Jordan Reel was intercepted by Pioneers Safety Kyler Evans (10:14 remaining in the fourth). The Hornets defense was able to make a crucial stop forcing the Pioneers to punt with 6 minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Beech Grove’s Kyion Tyler was able to take the Pioneers punt 80 yards for a Hornets touchdown (2 Point Conversion failed) pulling Beech Grove to within 5, 17-12 with just under six minutes to play.
The Hornets had one last opportunity to win the football game, after forcing the Pioneers to punt, Beech Grove took over on their on 20 with less than three minutes to play. Mooresville’ s defense rose to the occasion one last time when Senior Linebacker Ryan Spangler intercepted Hornets quarterback Jordan Reel to seal the Pioneers first win of the 2017 season.

(Interceptions: Evans/Spangler) in the win. Running Back James Mabry finished the night with 24 carries, 157 yards, and 2 touchdowns with Quarterback Karson Goodman throwing for 149 yards led by Receiver Jon Eineman with 5 catches and 86 yards.
The 17-12 win was a total team effort and is the stepping stone the team needs moving into next weeks Sectional 22 battle with the Connersville Spartans (4-5) and beyond. Friday also marked Coach Mike Gillin’s first win as the Pioneer’s Head Coach. The leadership and perseverance shown by the Pioneer Seniors throughout the process has been a true example of the never give up attitude that Coach Gillin and his Coaching Staff work diligently on each week to instill in the ball club.
The Mooresville Pioneers will enjoy the victory for the next 12-24 hours and will then turn their focus to the Connersville Spartans and next Fridays opening round play of the Sectional 22 playoff at Connersville, Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm. Take the time to enjoy the win Mooresville, you deserve the opportunity to soak in the spoils of victory but do not get to comfortable, there is work to be done.
