Boys Varsity Football · 2018 Mooresville Pioneers Varsity Football Season Wrap Up

Thank you again to all of the Mooresville Pioneer parents,  families,  students,  fans,  Administration, and the entire Town of Mooresville Indiana for the support the last 13 weeks.  Though the 2018 season came to an end a little sooner than the Coaching Staff and Players would have liked,  it was an absolutely wonderful season full of thrills and action packed Friday Nights.

2018 Regular Season

The 2018 campaign started with a three consecutive road games in which the Pioneers went 3-0.  Week one featured a decisive 46-7 victory over the Lebanon Tigers followed by a week two win over the Danville Warriors 28-26.  Week three saw the Pioneers pick up their first Mid State Conference win over the Plainfield Quakers in a high scoring affair,  52-42 before returning home in week four to open the home portion of the schedule.   The week four home opener had the Greenwood Woodmen in town as the Pioneers reeled off win number four on the young season, 49-14 and picked up their second Conference win.

Week five had the Pioneers back on the road as they traveled to Mid State Conference rival Decatur Central where Mooresville lost a close ballgame 38-28 picking up their only loss of the regular season, dropping to 2-1 in the Mid State and 4-1 overall.  The Pioneers had no time to dwell on the loss as they returned home in week six to face the Franklin Community Grizzly Cubs for Homecoming.  Mooresville wasted no time getting back on track as the Pioneers defeated the Grizzly Cubs 55-21 to move their 2018 record to 5-1 (3-1 Mid State) through six weeks.  Week seven had the Pioneers on the road for the final time in the 2018 regular season traveling to Whiteland to take on the Warriors and what a game it turned out to be.

The ballgame was tied at 14 with just under 2 minutes to play and the Warriors had the ball at the Pioneers 5 yard line.  The Pioneers defense held the Warriors to a 22 yard field goal  as Whiteland took the lead 17-14 with 1:43 to play.  Mooresville started their final drive at their own 20 yard line with no timeouts remaining and 80 yards to go.   Karson Goodman would take control of the final 100 seconds, hitting Jon Eineman and 2 long passes which would set Mooresville up at the Whiteland 1 yard line.  Running back James Mabry would cash in from 1 yard out to give the Pioneers their sixth win of the year on the final drive of the game, 21-17 (6-1 overall and 4-1 Mid State Conference).  Week eight had the Martinsville Artesian in town for the “Battle of the M” and it lived up to all that was expected.  The ballgame was a tight contest the entire night and was won on a 45 yard field goal by Senior kicker Christian Swigert with 4.4 seconds on the clock,  24-21 and with it the Pioneers moved to 7-1 with one regular season game to be played (5-1 Mid State).

The Perry Meridian Falcons the most recent addition to the Mid State Conference came to town for the final week of the regular season where the Pioneers had an opportunity for a Conference Championship and an 8-1 regular season record with a win.  The Mooresville Pioneers started a bit slow but did not disappoint,  closing out week nine and the regular season with a 51-21 win over the Falcons and with it a Mid State Conference Championship and an 8-1 regular season record.

2018 Post Season

The Mooresville Pioneers fresh off their 8-1 regular season run turned their attention to the post season and Sectional 22 week one opponent, the Beech Grove Hornets.  Week one of the sectional had the Pioneers hosting the Hornets on a cold a rain soaked track.  The weather took a bit to get used to but when the Pioneers got going they did not look back and beat the Hornets 49-21 to move to week two and a Sectional Semi Final road matchup with the Richmond Red Devils.  The Pioneers picked up where they left off in week one as they brought the cold an rain with them to Richmond as the Blue and Gold defeated the Red Devils of Richmond High School, 48-21 and advanced to their second consecutive Sectional Championship.

The 2018 Sectional 22 Championship game would once again be played at home against a familiar foe in the Greenwood Woodmen the same Greenwood Woodmen that defeated the Pioneers in the 2017 Sectional Championship 59-32.  The Pioneers had been waiting for this opportunity for 365 days and it had arrived,  a second chance to break down the door of a Sectional Championship, something that had not been done in 14 seasons.  Mooresville ensured early on that the bitter taste of 2017 would not be repeated in 2018 as the Pioneers would win their first Sectional  Championship since 2004, defeating Greenwood 49-14 earning a trip to the 2018 Regional Championship.

The 2018 Regional Championship game would be played at Marion High School as the Mooresville Pioneers (11-1) would take on the Marion Giants (12-0) with a trip to the Semi State on the line.  The Pioneers took a 7 point lead into the half (7-0) in what was a first half defensive battle.  Marion would score on the first drive of the second half and tack on another quick score to go up 12-7 with a little over a quarter and a half to play.  The Mooresville Pioneers had chances to even things up and or take the lead but could not capitalize eventually loosing to the Giants 19-13 thus ending what was an absolutely magnificent 13 week run.

Thank you to ALL PLAYERS that wear the Blue and Gold with PRIDE each and every Friday night and thank you to ALL COACHES and members of the Football Staff for your time and effort to ensure the team is prepared to compete each and every week.  It is not easy when a season comes to an end but thank you to everyone involved that made the 2018 Mooresville Pioneers Football season so exciting and one for the ages.
