The Mooresville Pioneers wrestling team hosted Franklin’s Grizzly Cubs in an action-packed dual meet on Tuesday night. The Pioneers put up a good fight and led for most of the match, but the Grizzly Cubs came out from underneath toward the end of the night, defeating the Pioneers with a team score of 24-39. Mooresville’s Brecken Greene faced Franklin’s Joshua Rigel at 120 pounds in the first match of the night with Greene winning 6-2, which started the Pioneers off with a 3-0 lead. At 126 pounds, Xander Lowery defeated his opponent 4-1 and continues to show improvement. At 132 Pioneers’ senior Spencer Cox gave the crowd a show when he won in overtime, getting a takedown bringing the score to 3-1. Battling it out at 138, Nick McGowan never let up on his opponent and drilled in a score of 3-2, bringing the team score to 12-0. Devin Scott lost 3-6 and put the Grizzly Cubs on the board. Senior Michael Craig won by fall at the 3:22 mark, making Craig 12-0 on the season. Augie Newkirk couldn’t hold on for the Pioneers and was defeated 3-6. Aiden Holtzclaw lost by fall at 1:02 in the 170-pound weight class. Next on mat at 182, Reese Condon lost by fall at 1:20. Mooresville’s sophomore Jake Aleksa wrestled the most exciting match of the night when he lost to a controversial call at the buzzer when his opponent escaped with less than a second in the match. At the 220 pound class, Gabe McClelland pinned his opponent at 1:59. Mooresville senior Jalen Comer surprisingly lost the heavyweight match by fall at 2:19 to a Franklin wrestler who can reportedly squat 600 lbs. At the top of the lineup, coming in at 106 pounds, senior Pioneers’ wrestler Dylan Young lost by fall 3:35. The last match of the night secured the win for the Grizzly Cubs when Mooresville freshman Isaiah Pugh got pinned at 4:42. Mooresville hosts a JV invitational on Saturday; the varsity is off to a tourney in Zionsville on Saturday where the team faces the Yorktown Tigers during its first dual meet of the day.
