On Friday night the Mooresville Pioneers (10-2) defeated the defending 4A State Champions and 4A Number One ranked East Central Trojans (11-1) 17-14 to claim their second consecutive Sectional Championship. With the win the Pioneers advance to the Regional Championship on Friday November 15, 2019 and will travel to Evansville to face the Evansville Memorial Tigers (11-1) who beat Evansville Central 38-14 in the Sectional 24 Championship.
Mooresville got the scoring started in the Sectional 23 Championship ballgame when Caden Robinson scored for 2 yards out (PAT- Brock Bodell) in the second quarter to give the Pioneers the lead 7-0. East Central would get on the board late in the first half on a 7 yard run by Devon Donawerth (PAT- Sophie Browndyke) to tie the game at 7. The Pioneers would answer East Central with 5.6 seconds on the clock when Kalija Perry hit Dom Oldham from one yard out (PAT-Bodell) to give Mooresville a 14-7 halftime lead.
The lead would remain at 7 through three quarters of play but would not last as East Central’s Devon Donawerth would score from 9 yards out on the very first play of the fourth quarter (PAT- Browndyke) to draw the game even at 14. That is the way it would stay as both teams would trade punts for the better part of the fourth quarter with neither team giving ground. The Pioneers defense forced an East Central 4-7 with 4:21 to play, the Trojans would punt the ball to Mooresville which would prove to be the winning possession.
The Mooresville offense would take over on their own 45 yard line and would take the ball to the East Central 19 yard line before facing a 4-12 with 1:44 to play in the game. Mooresville would send out place kicker Brock Bodell to attempt a 36 yard field goal but the Trojans would lineup offsides giving the Pioneers 5 yards extra yards. Bodell now faced a 31 yard field goal an opportunity that Bodell cashed in on splitting the uprights to put the Pioneers up 17-14. Mooresville’s defense needed one final stop and that is exactly what the Pioneers defense provided as Brayden Evans picked off East Central’s Ryan Bond to preserve the 3 point win.
The Mooresville Pioneers defense stole the show in the victory on Friday night, collecting three more turnovers (Interceptions by: Kamden Schmitt, Dane Stevenson, and Brayden Evans) and held East Central to 159 of total offense (47 passing and 112 rushing), an offense that was averaging 354.8 yards per contest coming into fridays Sectional Championship. Mooresville would hold the Trojans to 14 points, an offense which came into the ballgame averaging just over 40 points over the course of 11 games. The Mooresville Pioneers defesense played physical all evening and the offense was able to score the points needed and the result is a second consectutive 4A Sectional 23 Championship and a second consectutive trip to the 4A Regional Championship.
The Mooresville Pioneers would like to thank all students, parents, families, friends, fans, and the MHS Administration for all the support on Friday evening and we look forward to seeing a huge crowd next week in Evansville for the 2019 Regional Championship.
