The Mooresville Lady Pioneers started the new year by hosting the Mt. Vernon Lady Marauders for their fourteenth game of the 2020-2021 season. Mooresville went 1-1 over the holiday break with a loss to Zionsville and a victory over Cathedral. Mt. Vernon went 1-1 during the holiday tournaments when they played in the Indiana Hall of Fame games this season. Mt. Vernon came into the game with a record of 7-4. The Lady Pioneers entered today’s game with a 8-5 record. Mt. Vernon hosted the Lady Pioneers last season and defeated them 44-38.
The Lady Pioneers came out with a physical intensity that held Mt. Vernon to 6 points in the first quarter and prevented the Lady Marauders leading scorer from scoring a point. The Pioneers scored 11 points by the end of the first quarter. The Lady Pioneers pushed their lead to 12 points in the second quarter but with two quick 3s, the Marauders kept the game close. Halftime score showed the Pioneers leading 23-14. With hot shooting from the 3pt arc, the Marauders outscored the Pioneers 14-10 and pulled the game score to 33-28. Mt. Vernon pulled within 3 points during the fourth quarter but the Lady Pioneers held on for a good 43-35 win.
Maddy Denny led the team in scoring with 15 points and Rachel Harshman scored in double digits again with 11 points. With a team record now at 9-5, the Lady Pioneers next regular season game will be Friday, January 8th at 7:30 when they host Mid-State Conference leading Franklin (4-0). The JV game will be starting at 6:00 pm.
