The Mooresville Lady Pioneers host the Mid-State Conference leading Franklin Lady Grizzly Cubs for their fifteenth game of the 2020-2021 season. The Lady Pioneers entered today’s game with a 9-5 record while the Grizzly Cubs came into the game with a #8 state ranking and a 13-1 record. Franklin hosted the Lady Pioneers last season and lost to the Pioneers 71-54.
The Lady Grizzly Cubs entered the game tonight as one of the best 3 point shooting teams in the state of Indiana and they used their outside shooting to make the Lady Pioneers play catch up the whole game. The Cubs hit 5 3 pointers in the first quarter and jumped out to a 17-7 lead over the Pioneers. The difference between the second and first quarter was that the shots didn’t go in. Franklin would go on to only score 5 points in the second quarter and the Lady Pioneers chip away at the Grizzly Cubs lead from the free throw line. After a 12-0 run to end the first half, the Lady Pioneers had whittled the Franklin lead down to 2 points, 20-22 Grizzly Cubs.
The second half started just like the first half with the Grizzly Cubs jumping out to a quick double digit lead by hitting 4 three pointers but this quarter the Lady Pioneers kept themselves in the game with excellent ball movement. Addy Shafer scored 6 points in the third quarter to help limit the Franklin lead to 4 points, 35-39. The fourth quarter saw both teams play to their strongest parts. The Lady Cubs lived from the lines again, making 3 three pointers and 4-6 at the free throw line. The Lady Pioneers played within the paint and found ways to score 10 points in the paint and make 4-6 free throws. With the score showing 48-50 Grizzly Cubs, the Pioneers came down the floor for a chance at a game tying basket. With 7.2 seconds left in the game, Abby Young was fouled going to the basket but could only connect on 1-2 free throws at the line. The Lady Pioneers fouled Franklin on the rebound and the Lady Grizzly Cubs went to the other end to make the last points of the game. The Pioneers did get off a final shot but the game ended 49-52 Franklin. The Lady Pioneers now go to 3-2 in the Mid-State Conference and the Lady Grizzly Cubs remain undefeated at 5-0.
Rachel Harshman led the team in scoring with 17 points and Junior Madelynn Denny scored double digits again with 11 points. The team record now stands at 9-6. The Lady Pioneers next regular season game will be Tuesday, January 12th at 7:30 when they host Franklin Central. The JV game will be starting at 6:00 pm.
