The Mooresville Lady Pioneers traveled to Terre Haute North tonight to play the Plainfield Lady Quakers in the first round of the Sectional 12 competition. The Lady Quakers and the Lady Pioneers played a hard fought game two weeks ago with the Pioneers prevailing 57-51 and tonight’s match-up was expected to be another tough game. Entering the Sectional game tonight, the Pioneers had a record of 14-7 and the Quakers had a record of 13-9.
The Pioneers got off to an excellent start in the first quarter outscoring the Quakers 10-5. The Pioneers outrebounded the Quakers 8-3 in the first quarter and shot 4-6 from the free throw line. During the second quarter, the Pioneers kept up the defensive and offensive effort and doubled the Lady Quakers 14-7 to take a 25-12 halftime lead. To start the third quarter, the Lady Quakers decided to take the fight right to the Pioneers. Plainfield came out with a 8-0 run at the start of the quarter and pushed the Pioneers back on their heels. The Lady Pioneers regrouped and scored two quick buckets to keep the lead in double digits but Plainfield kept the momentum for the rest of the quarter and outscored the Pioneers 15-10. End of the third quarter saw the Pioneers still leading 34-27. At the start of the fourth quarter, the Lady Quakers went on a scoring tear to take the lead at 35-34. The halftime lead for the Pioneers was gone and the fight for the win was on. Mooresville and Plainfield exchanged baskets back and forth for the last 5:30 of the fourth quarter. Plainfield hit a basket in the lane with less than :20 seconds left to take a two point lead. Abby Young drove the lane for the Pioneers and was fouled with :06.8 seconds left. Abby calmly stepped to the line, hit both free throws, and sent the game into overtime. In the overtime period, the Lady Quakers took all their excitement and energy from the comeback and easily pushed past the Lady Pioneers. Plainfield went 6-6 from the foul line in the overtime period. The Quakers won the hard fought game 53-47 by outscoring the Lady Pioneers 41-23 in the second half.
Addy Shafer led the team in scoring and rebounding tonight. Addy scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the loss. Rachel Harshman scored 13 points for the Pioneers. The Lady Pioneers end their season with a record of 14-8.
