If a football season were a book and the book included 9 chapters, the 9 chapters being the 9 games that make up the regular season than chapter 8 would have to be right up there with the first 7. The storybook season that continues to be penned each week continued on Friday night as the Mooresville Pioneers defeated the Martinsville Artesians on a 45 yard Christian Swigert field goal as time expired to secure the 24-21 win.

Martinsville started the scoring in the first quarter when Travis Griffey scored from 1 yard out, PAT was good (Caleb Urban) to give the Atresians an early 7 point lead. Mooresville would bounce right back as Senior H-Back Blake Garrett would punch it in from a yard out, PAT was good (Christian Swigert) to knot he ballgame at 7 a piece heading into the second quarter. The Pioneers would score the only points of the second quarter when Karson Goodman found Brayden Evans for a 93 yard score (PAT- Swigert) to take a 14-7 lead into the half.

Defensively the Pioneers played well, holding the Artesians on several possessions limiting Martinsville’s scoring opportunities throughout the game. Both defenses would play solid in the third quarter as neither team would score, setting up the firworks in the fourth. The Artesians started the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 7 yard run by Isaac Osborne (PAT- Urban) to tie the game at 14. James Mabry Jr. would cap off the Pioneers next drive with a 2 yard run of his own (PAT- Swigert) to give Mooresville a 7 point cushion with under 2 minutes to play. Martinsville would take the ensuing kickoff down the field and score to tie things back up at 21 with a Travis Griffey 5 yard run (PAT- Urban) with 40 seconds in the ballgame.

Most teams would look to play for overtime tied at 21 with 40 seconds to play and one timeout but not the Mooresville Pioneers. 40 seconds and one timeout would prove to be the right formula to conclude chapter 8 of the 2018 regular season. After the kickoff Mooresville would start the game winning drive on their own 40 yard line with 34.2 seconds and one timeout. The Pioneers were moving the ball down the field, picking off 10-15 yards a play before facing a huge 4th and 3 with 8.3 seconds to play. On the next play Karson Goodman would hit Kyler Evans on the Pioneers sideline as Evans would go out of bounds at the 29 yard line stopping the clock with 4.4 seconds setting up the game winning field goal.

Mooresville would send out place Kicker Christian Swigert who had just missed a go ahead field goal in a previous drive to attempt the 45 yard walk off kick. Mooresville would use it’s final timeout to talk things over before sending the team out to lineup for the kick. Martinsville would then use its final timeout in attempt to ice the young kicker but it would prove to be ineffective. After the Artesians timeout both clubs would line up one last time with the final outcome in the balance. A perfect snap was made, the ball was placed on the tee, and Christian Swigert drilled the 45 yard game winner as time expired putting an exclamation point on chapter 8 of the regular season.

The Mooresville Pioneers would like to thank the parents, students, families, friends, fans, Administration, and the ENTIRE Town of Mooresville Indiana for an AWESOME showing on Friday, you left no doubt about your support, it is so much appreciated. The Pioneers will be back in action Friday October 12th at 7pm as they will host the Perry Meridian Falcons on Senior Night 2018.
