The Mooresville Pioneers took to the road on Tuesday afternoon to take on Mid State Conference rival Decatur Central and came home with a 6-4 win and improve their regular season record to 4-0 (3-0 MSC). The Pioneers began the contest with bases loaded in the first inning but were unable to push across a run stranding 3 Mooresville base runners early. Decatur went scoreless in the bottom half of the first but took a 4 run lead in the bottom of the second as Mooresville went scoreless through two frames.
The Pioneers were able to score 2 runs in the third inning and 1 run in the fourth inning to draw to with in a run of the Hawks through 4 innings, 4-3. Mooresville would tie the game at four in the seventh inning as Dane Stevenson would score on a ball put in play by Nolan Bond as Bond would reach on a throwing error by the Decatur Central Hawks catcher. The Pioneers would hold off the Hawks in the seventh inning sending the game to extra innings.
Mooresville would take the lead in the top of the eighth on runs by Dustin Jeffries and Brady Huntsman to take a 6-4 lead headed to the bottom of the eighth inning. The Pioneers would send the Hawks down in order in the eighth as Dane Stevenson fielded the final Hawks ground ball throwing to first to secure the clubs fourth win of the season.
Nolan Bond turned in a gutsy performance on the mound for the Pioneers completing 4 solid innings giving up 3 hits on 3 earned runs surrendering 3 walks and striking out 5. Caden Bradley relieved Bond in the fifth inning and kept the Decatur Central Hawks hitters at bay for three solid innings. Bradley faced 9 Hawk batters striking and struck out 5 giving up zero hits and no runs keeping the ballgame tied at 4 through 7 innings. Hogan Denny came in in the bottom half of the eighth with the Pioneers up 6-4 and recorded the final 3 outs (Strikeout, Strikeout, and Ground Ball) of the ballgame and the 6-4 Pioneers win.
The Pioneers collected nine hits in the win on Tuesday evening. Tommy O’Connor, Nolan Bond, Dane Stevenson, and Dustin Jeffries each collected 2 hits with Jack Robinson adding an RBI single. The Pioneers will be back in action on Wednesday for part two of the home and home as Decatur Central will come to town for the 2021 “Trophy” game, first pitch slated for 5:30pm.
