If you were to go back 14 years almost to the day, you would find the last time the Mooresville Pioneers celebrated a Sectional Championship, November 5th 2004 (Mooresville Pioneers 37 Greenwood Woodmen 14). Fast forward to November 2nd 2018 where the Mooresville Pioneers would face the Greenwood Woodmen for the Sectional 22 Championship and a spot in next week’s 4A Regional Title game.
The Pioneers opened the scoring on their second drive of the game when running back James Mabry scored his first of 3 touchdowns from one yard out (PAT Swigert) to give Mooresville the lead which they never relinquished. Mooresville would score twice more on a 15 yard run by Mabry and a 63 yard pass from Karson Goodman to Jon Eineman, Swigert would tack on both PAT’s and the Pioneers would lead 21-0 at the end of quarter one. The Pioneers Breken Greene would score from 20 yards out and Mabry from 41 yards out (PAT’s Swigert) in the second quarter to give Mooresville a 35 point lead going into halftime (35-0).
Greenwood would receive the opening kick of the second half and put together a nice drive which was capped off by a 5 yard run by Nick Willham (PAT Lex Logan) to put the woodmen on the board. Mooresville would answer with a 7 yard touchdown pass from Goodman to Eineman (PAT Swigert) to build their lead back to 35 points midway through the third period. The Pioneers would score their final touchdown of the Championship when Goodman would hit Braydon Evans for a 39 yard touchdown pass (PAT Swigert) just before the third quarter came to an end giving Mooresville a 49-7 lead.
Greenwood would score the only points of the fourth quarter when quarterback Luke Hommell would punch it in from 2 yards out (PAT Logan) as the Woodmen defense would hold the Pioneers out of the endzone in the final period. Despite the 14 points the Woodmen managed to score the Mooresville Defense came to play. Greenwood ran 70 plays from scrimmage with the Pioneers giving up a total of 244 yards (3.4 average), 237 on the ground and 7 through the air. The Mooresville defense was fast to the ball, winning the turnover battle with a plus 4, causing one fumble which was recovered by Kamden Schmitt and picked off Luke Hommell 3 times (Jon Eineman, James Mabry, and Augie Newkirk). The Pioneers defense did a very nice job of limiting the Woodmen offensively forcing 4 Greenwood punts allowing the Mooresville offense good field position throughout the game.
Friday nights Sectional 22 Championship Win will be celebrated for a few hours and then it is back to work in preparation for next week’s Regional Championship. The Regional Championship will be played at Marion High School on Friday November 9, 2018 at 7pm versus the Marion Giants (12-0).
