The Pioneers loaded the buses for the second consecutive week traveling to Danville Indiana to take on the Warriors who had beaten the Pioneers in their previous meeting at Lucas Oil Stadium last season, 59-17. The Pioneers had not forgotten the 42 point loss they had suffered a year ago as they prepared for the 2018 week two matchup with the Warriors. The Pioneers defense started out the evening, forcing a very good Danville Warriors offense to punt on their opening possession giving Mooresville quality field position for their opening drive (MV 33 yard line).
Mooresville took advantage of the quality field position taking the ball down the field through the air and on the ground capped off by 3 yard touchdown run by James Mabry Jr, his first of two, PAT was good ( C. Swigert), Pioneers 7 Danville 0. Danville was able to answer with a touchdown of their own before the first quarter ended as quarterback Ben Slaton hit Connor Jones on a 9 yard pass, PAT failed, Mooresville 7 Danville 6.
The Pioneers took a 14-6 lead in the second quarter when Mabry Jr scored his second of two rushing touchdowns from 11 yards out, PAT was good (Swigert). Danville’s Ben Slaton quickly took to the air and hit Mark Broderick on a 19 yard touchdown pass just before the half concluded, two point conversion failed, Mooresville 14 Danville 12 at the half way point.
Mooresville received the opening kickoff to begin the third quarter and swiftly took the ball down field aided by a big yard run by Brayden Evans setting the Pioneers up inside the Warriors 20 yard line. Mooresville faced a fourth and ten just inside the Danville 15 yard line when Karson Goodmans was intercepted by Danville’s Mark Broderick setting up the Warriors offense on their own 10. After two big runs by Ben Slaton the Warriors moved the ball to the Pioneers 15. On the next snap Slaton hit Dostin on a 15 yard seam route to take the lead 20-14 (2 point conversion was good). Mooresville was not to be outdone, Brayden Evans scored on a 60 yard run on the very next possession (PAT Good Swigert) to give the lead back to Mooresville 21-20.
After another tremdous defensive stand by the Pioneers the Warriors punted giving Mooresville possession on on their own 47. On the first play of the possession Goodman hit Brayden Evans on a 57 yard touchdown pass (PAT Good Swigert) Mooresville 28 Danville 20. The third quarter came to a close with Danville facing a fourth and goal inside the Pioneer 2 yard line. Danville cashed in on the first play of the fourth with Slaton hitting Dostin for a 2 yard touchdown ( 2 point conversion failed) Mooresville 28 Danville 26.
That would do it for the scoring but the excitement did not end there. The Mooresville Pioneers defense had to come up with two defensive stops late in the game to seal the win and they did exactly that. The final stand came with 1:25 remaining in the final period when Danville was faced with a fourth and 8 from the Mooresville 34 yard line. Danville’s Ben Slaton took the snap and fired a pass to his right and the ball was deflected out of bounds turning the ball over to the Pioneers and with it a huge 28-26 victory for the boys in blue.
Friday nights win was an entire team effort, the Pioneers would like to thank the parents, families, students, friends, and fans as well as the Town of Mooresville for all your support. Thank you to those who made the trip to Danville as well as those tuning into the live stream and Max Preps, your support is appreciated.
