Tuesday April 6, 2021marked the first time the Mooresville Pioneers Varsity Baseball Team have taken to the diamond for regular season play in over a year. The Pioneers traveled to Martinsville to take on the Artesians in the 2021 Indiana High School Baseball regular season opener. Mooresville jumped out to an early 3 run lead in the top of the second inning and did not relinquish the lead all evening winning the ballgame 10-3.
Senior Tommy O’Connor started the game on the hill for the Pioneer and was credited with the win. O’Connor threw 4 complete innings giving up 3 hits with 4 strikeouts and 1 base on balls while surrendering 3 runs. Junior Nick Wiley entered the ballgame in the 5th inning in relief of O’Connor. Wiley was efficient in the relief role going the final 3 innings giving up 2 hits with 3 K’s, 1 walk, and 2 runs.
At the plate the Mooresville Pioneers were able to produce 10 runs on 12 hits. The Pioneers hitters were walked twice while collecting 10 k’s, something that the club will look to improve upon in Wednesday’s home opener. The Pioneers were lead by Senior Catcher Craig Perry with 2 hits (HR-Double and 2 RBI) along with Senior Ethan Mesacar who also collected 2 hits (single-single) along with an RBI.
In the win the Pioneers had 6 extra base hits, 3 homeruns (Nick Wiley, Craig Perry, and Brock Bodell) along with 3 doubles (Brady Huntsman, Craig Perry, and Hogan Denny). Mooresville will look to keep the bats hot on Wednesday eveining (4/7/2021) as the Martinsville Artesians come to town for game two of the Mid State Conference home and home matchup, first pitch scheduled for 5:30pm.
