The Moooresville Pioneers (8-2) traveled to Aurora Indiana on Friday evening to take on the South Dearborn Knights in the opening round of the 2019 Indiana High School Football Tournament. The Pioneers would defeat the Knights 35-13, their fourth consecutive opening round sectional (23) win dating back to the 2016 season. Mooresville received the opening kickoff and marched 73 yards which was capped off with a 4 yard touchdown run by Breken Greene (PAT- Brock Bodell) to take an early 7 point lead.

The Pioneers would add one more score in the first quarter when Kalija Perry hit Dane Stevenson from 14 yards out (PAT- Bodell) to close out the first quarter. South Dearborn would pull to within 8 points when Blake Bartley would score from 18 yards out (PAT Failed) to put the Knights on the board. Mooresville bounced right back scoring two more times in the second quarter (Perry to Brayden Evans on a 20 yard pass and Greene from 25 yards out, PAT’s Bodell) to take a commanding 28-6 halftime lead. Caden Robinson would close out the scoring for Mooresville cashing in from 4 yards out in the third quarter to give the Pioneers a 35-6 lead heading into the final quarter. South Dearborn would score the lone touchdown of the fourth quarter on a 1 yard run by Dalton Guthrie (PAT- Dalton Hatfield).

The Mooresville Pioneers defense came up big once again, holding the Knights offense to 13 points which was averging 25.4 points per contest in the regular season. The Pioneers forced three turnovers (2 interceptions, Dane Stevenson and Xander Lowry and 1 fumble recovery, Ty Smith) for the second consecutive week preserving the 35-13 first round Sectional 23 victory. With the win the Pioneers advance to the semi final and a week 8 rematch (Mooresville -46 Martinsville- 22) with Mid State Conference rival Martinsville. The Artesians defeated Jennings County in opening round action on Friday 42-7 to earn a spot in Friday’s semi final with the Pioneers.

The Mooresville Pioneers will host the Martinsville Artesians on Friday November 1 at 7pm in the semi final with the winner advancing to the Sectional 23 Championship Game which will be played on Friday November 8, 2019. The Pioneers would like to thank all of you that made the trip to South Dearborn on Friday evening as well as all of you that were supporting the club back at home and across the state, the support is so much appreciated. We look forward to seeing everyone on Friday November 1st as the Pioneers and Artesians will battle it out for a spot in the Sectional 23 Championship game November 8th.
