The Mooresville Pioneers entered Friday nights Mid State Conference match up with the Plainfield Quakers riding a 2 game winning streak and had their eyes set on win number three as soon as the team stepped off the bus and began pre game activities. The Pioneers are familiar with playing on the road, Friday’s trip to Plainfield was Mooresville’s third consectutive road game to began the 2018 campaign. The road seems to be a formula of success for the Pioneers, fighting through adversity and finding ways to win ball games that they may have lost in past seasons.
Friday nights shoot out between Mooresville and Plainfield saw the two teams combine for 94 points, 938 total yards, 135 offensive plays, 451 rushing yards, 487 passing yards, 53 first downs, 13 touchdowns, and 7 total turnovers. Of those statistics mentioned, Mooresville had a total of 441 yards, ran 60 plays, threw for 239 yards, and rushed for 202. The Pioneers managed 24 first downs and won the turnover battle with a plus three in the give away take away department ( Turnovers: Pioneer 2 Plainfield 5).
Mooresville’s offensive attack was lead by senior running back James Mabry Jr. who had 177 rushing yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns, Mabry added an 8 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown to cap off his evening. Pioneers quarterback Karson Goodman threw for 239 yards (17 for 23) and two touchdown passes including one interception. Brayden Evans had 3 catches for 80 yards and a score, brother Kyler had 5 receptions for 62 yards and one touchdown, followed by Jon Eineman with 6 catches, 58 yards, and a fumble (Plainfield recovered).
The Pioneers defense battled the entire night, making adjustments throughout the contest that paid off big when the game was on the line. Mooresville and Plainfield traded scores for a majority of the first half as either side could make the needed stop that would be the difference maker for the first 24 minutes (Halftime tied at 28). The Pioneers defense came out in the second half with a refreshed look and made plays that made a difference in the outcome of the ball game. The 28 points given up in the first half were cut in half in the second half as the defense caused the Quakers offense all kinds of issues is the final 24 minutes surrendering just 14 in the final two quarters.
The Mooresville defense forced 5 Plainfield turnovers with one fumble resulting in a defensive score (James Mabry Jr.), and a plus 3 in the give away take away category. The Pioneers intercepted the Quakers on three different occasion with James Mabry Jr. starting things off followed by a pick by Kyler Evans capped off by an INT by Dane Stevneson to seal the victory late in the fourth. Defensive tackle Jalen Schuck joined the turnover party recovering a fumble deep inside Plainfield territory in the fourth quarter.
The Coaching Staff and Players realize that they have just gotten started and have a clear understanding that there is plenty of work still to be done with 6 regular season games to play. The club will get back to work in a few short hours as they will review film Saturday morning and begin putting together a game plan for the Mooresville Pioneers home opener next Friday September 7 when they will take on Greenwood at 7pm.
