The Mooresville Pioneers improved their 2018 record to 5-1 (3-1 in Mid State Conference) on Friday night with an impressive 55-21 win over the Franklin Community Grizzly Cubs. Franklin Community looked as if they would pick up where they left off in 2017 (W 52-14) as they struck first to take an early 7 point lead on a 21 touchdown pass from Drew Byerly to Peyton Ruble (PAT Good- Spencer Downhour). The Mooresville Pioneers would not except a repeat performance in 2018 answering the bell in a big way, scoring the next 24 points of the ballgame and did not look back.
The Pioneers seemed to be a bit sluggish in the first few series of the game but after settling in, the club managed to play the remainder of the ballgame with a sense of urgency and purpose. James Mabry Jr. started the scoring for Mooresville with a 2-yard run (PAT Good- Christian Swigert) to tie things up at 7 early in the first quarter. Mabry would score two more times with runs from 8 and 6 yards to finish the night with 102 yards rushing and 3 scores.
Senior wideout, Jon Eineman did his fair share of damage scoring 3 touchdowns of his own. Eineman began with a 77-yard touchdown pass from Karson Goodman followed up by an 82-yard punt return and closed it out with a 39-yard reception from Goodman early in the fourth quarter. Eineman would finish the night with 9 catches and 196 receiving yards. Mooresville Pioneers placekicker, Christian Swigert was 6 for 6 on PAT’s and tacked on 2 field goals hitting from 35 and 20 yards scoring a total of 12 points. The Pioneers final touchdown came on a 6 yard run by quarterback Logan Pedigo with Brock Bodell adding the extra point.
The Pioneers defense came to play Friday evening, holding the Grizzly Cubs to 311 total yards, 197 passing and 114 rushing on 53 plays surrendering just12 first downs. Mooresville’s defense did not allow the Grizzly Cub offense to get into any type of rhythm forcing 2 turnovers, 5 punts, and 2 quarterback sacks. Outside linebacker Hayden Vaughan had a fumble recovery followed by an interception by inside linebacker Adrian Diop. Blake Garrett and Tommy O’Connor were able to get to Grizzly Cub quarterback Drew Byerly forcing the two sacks.
Friday nights win was an entire team effort capped off with hard-nosed defensive play and an offense and special teams unit that would not settle for anything less than a victory. The Mooresville Pioneers continue to get better each and every play and work relentlessly to improve from game to game. The Pioneers will enjoy the Homecoming win a little longer than usual but will get back to work on Saturday morning as they begin preparation for next week’s opponent, the Whiteland Warriors.
The Mooresville Pioneers Varsity Football Team would like to thank the parents, families, students, friends, fans, Administration, and the Town of Mooresville for the fantastic support not only for Homecoming but each and every Friday night of the season, it is so much appreciated. Enjoy the Homecoming weekend and the time spent with friends and family, stay safe and have fun.
