The Mooresville Pioneers opened their home portion of the 2018 season on Friday night with a convincing win over Mid State Conference rival Greenwood, 49-14. The Pioneers opened up the scoring early, taking a 7 point lead on their first possession when Karson Goodman hit Jon Eineman on a 6 yard fade ( PAT- Christian Swigert) and the Pioneers never looked back.

Mooresville (4-0) racked up 457 offensive yards on 73 plays, 262 on the ground, and 195 through the air collecting 23 first downs and 7 touchdowns. The Pioneers defense turned in another solid performance forcing three turnovers giving up just under 270 total yards (269), 217 on the ground and 52 passing allowing 14 points.

Mooresville tacked on two more scores in the first quarter to take a 21-0 lead 12 minutes into the contest. Senior running back James Mabry Jr scored his first of two rushing touchdowns on an inside zone run from 42 yards out (PAT- Swigert) to give Mooresville a 14 point lead. Senior H-Back Blake Garrett closed out the scoring in the first quarter taking the ball in from 3 yards out (PAT- Swigert) to give the Pioneers a 21-0 lead. Mooresville started the scoring in the second quarter when Goodman and Eineman connected for the second time, this time for 47 yards and a score (PAT- Swigert) to take a 28 point lead.

Greenwood was able to get on the board when Luke Raker hit Oliver Rau on a 17 touchdown (PAT- Lex Logan) to cut the Pioneers lead to 21. Mooresville answered with a score right before the half when Mabry Jr scored from 9 yards out (PAT- Swigert) to give the Mooresville Pioneers a 35-7 halftime lead. Neither ball club was able to score in the third quarter as each team only had one possession a piece. Sophomore Running back Breken Greene opened the scoring for the Pioneers in the fourth quarter scoring from 3 yards out (PAT- Swigert) to give the Pioneers a 42-7 lead. Greenwood took the kickoff down to the Mooresville 16 yard line and scored on the next play when running back Nick Willham rushed the 16 yards (PAT- Logan) for the score, Pioneers 42 Woodmen 14.

Junior quarterback Kalija Perry wrapped up the Mooresville Pioneers scoring rushing from 3 yards out (PAT- Swigert) to preserve the win, 49-14. Mooresville’s defense had the Woodmen off balance the entire evening intercepting Greenwood twice and recovering one fumble. The Pioneers defense had several quality performances which was lead by Senior defensive back Gavin Evans who had 11 tackles, a fumble recovery, and an interception. 4 players recorded double digit tackles (solo/assists) G. Evans 11, Adrian Diop 11, Jackson Klemm 10, and Kamden Schmitt 10 with several other defenders also contributing to the evenings work. Senior outside linebacker Augie Newkirk was also able to collect an interception to round out the Pioneers defensive takeaways.

With the win Mooresville moves to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in Mid State Conference play. One of the biggest tests of the season awaits the Mooresville Pioneers in week 5 when the Pioneers will make the short trip down State Road 67 to take on the Decatur Central Hawks on Friday September 14th. In the mean time the Pioneers will enjoy Friday’s win until Saturday morning when it is back to work in preparation for a meeting with Decatur Central.
