The Mooresville Girls JV Basketball hosted Cathedral on Thursday night and looked for a chance to get back on a winning streak after recent losses to Bishop Chatard and Columbus North. The Lady Pioneers and Lady Irish JV teams have been playing each other for the past five seasons and many of the games have been exciting and decided late in the fourth quarter. The 2024 reclassifications dropped Cathedral back into the 3A division and that helped them win their first sectional title since 2005. Last season, the Lady Irish JV hit 4 free throws in the last seconds of the game to seal a win 33-38 after the Lady Pioneers JV rallied back from a slow start in the first quarter. After a sluggish start to the game, the Lady Pioneers JV team turned up the intensity and pressure on the Lady Irish and recovered to a 2 point deficit by the end of the first half. The turn around for the Lady Pioneers started once they began to drive the ball to the basket with more confidence and aggression. The strong drives forced the Lady Irish to change up their defense a couple of times and these changes helped the Pioneers get some good shots immediately around the basket to chip away at the Irish control of the game. As the second half started, the Irish threw another defense at the Lady Pioneers that left the high elbows wide open and quick passes put the Pioneers in scoring position immediately. As the Lady Pioneers started to shoot more frequently around the basket, they started to pull away in the second half. The Pioneers lead was as high as 8 in the fourth quarter and the game ended with a Mooresville victory over Cathedral 38-32. The 38-32 victory for the Lady Pioneers changes the team’s record to 2-2 on the season. Leading the JV team in scoring was Bri Addair with 11 points. Cathedral’s next game will be on next Tuesday when they host the Lady Royals of Hamilton Southeastern. For the Lady Pioneers next game, they will host for the first time the Danville Lady Warriors. The Mooresville-Danville game will take place next Tuesday, November 13th.
