The Mooresville Girls JV basketball team traveled back down to Columbus on Friday to play the second Columbus community high school, Columbus East. Columbus East High School is a member of the Hoosier Hills Conference and the Lady Olympians are assigned to 4A Sectional 14 along with Columbus North, Franklin, Whiteland, and East Central. The Columbus East JV team has gotten off to a strong 4-1 start on the season and has been averaging around 45 points a game to date. The Lady Pioneers come into tonight’s game with a record of 2-4 and averaging around 33 points a game. The Lady Olympians and Lady Pioneers played last season with the Pioneers coming up with a good win 24-10. With the late arrival to Columbus East, the Lady Pioneers JV had only a couple of minutes to warm up and get ready for the game but you would have never known that by the way the team played in the first quarter. The Lady Pioneers jumped out to a 14-4 lead with some hot shooting and a tenacious defense that stymied the Olympians. The Olympians crept back into the game during the second quarter as Columbus East picked up their effort and the Lady Pioneers struggled to find their offensive rhythm. The first half ended with the Lady Pioneers holding a slim 16-11 lead. With another strong offensive and defensive effort in the third quarter sealed the victory for the Lady Pioneers. Most of the Pioneers’ points came off of steals and offensive rebounds in the third quarter and the team rebuilt their lead back into double digits. That double digit lead would remain intact for much of the fourth quarter until Columbus East would get a couple of late baskets to pull the Pioneers lead under 10. The game ended with a Lady Pioneer victory over a solid Columbus East JV team 34-26. The 34-26 defeat/victory for the Lady Pioneers improves the team’s record to 3-3 on the season. Leading the JV team in scoring was Kenzie Garrett with 7 points. Three other Lady Pioneers scored 6 points each to propel the team to victory. The Lady Olympians will have a full weekend off and then return to the court against South Decatur on November 25th. The next game for the Lady Pioneers JV team will start their Mid-State Conference schedule when the Lady Pioneers and Lady Artesians get together to play their annual Thanksgiving Break game.
