Bad weather back in early December delayed the Girls basketball game between the Lady Pioneers and the Lady Patriots from Terre Haute North High School until December 22nd. The Lady Pioneers JV team has put together a small Mid-State conference winning streak of four games that has raised their season record up to 7-3. Last season, the Lady Pioneers JV team defeated the Lady Patriots 40-15. With the Lady Patriots playing a strong 2-3 zone for most of the game, the Lady Pioneers JV team found themselves a bit frustrated with their scoring rhythm but chipped away in moments to build small leads in most of the quarters. The Lady Pioneers won the first quarter 12-8 but struggled in the second quarter to stop the ball screen and penetration of the Lady Patriots best player. As the Lady Patriots scored inside the lane and outside the arc, the Lady Pioneers became a little bewildered on what to do for the second half. The Lady Pioneers held a slim 17-16 halftime lead. With some aggressive defensive changes, the Lady Pioneers jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the third quarter and just took Terre Haute North out of their rhythm. Turnovers for the Lady Patriots hindered any scoring they could put together in the second half and they only managed to score six points in the third quarter and one basket in the fourth quarter. Once the Lady Pioneers built up an eight point lead in the fourth quarter, they started to slowly work the clock down as the Patriots stayed in their 2-3 zone for the whole game and never pressured the Pioneers out on the perimeter. Despite putting up their lowest scoring total in the past seven games, the Lady Pioneers found a way to outlast the effort of Terre Haute North and cruised to a 33-24 victory over a well coached Terre Haute North JV team. The 33-24 victory for the Lady Pioneers improves the team’s record to 8-3 on the season. Leading the JV team in scoring was Kaydence Straneva with 9 points. The Lady Patriots JV team will take some time off the court and then return on Tuesday, December 30th when they travel to Sullivan to play the Lady Golden Arrows. The Lady Pioneers JV takes the rest of the Christmas Break off and will return to the count in 2026. They will host the Lady Cougars from Bloomington North High School as part of a Boy/Girl doubleheader on Tuesday, January 6th.
