The Lady Pioneers Girls JV team traveled last night to Franklin to play their Mid-State rival the Lady Grizzly Cubs. The Lady Pioneers JV team has put together a small winning streak over the past couple games as they enter the toughest part of their schedule. Last night’s game was another chance for the Lady Pioneers to defend their undefeated record in Mid-State conference play. Last season, the Lady Pioneers JV team defeated the Lady Grizzly Cubs 44-39. After witnessing a tough defeat in the Varsity competition, the Lady Pioneer JV team took to the court to make an effort to salvage at least one win for the program on Friday night. But a smothering Grizzly Cub defense and a seemingly impenetrable lid on the Lady Pioneers basket prevented the Pioneers from scoring a point in the first quarter and the game just got tougher from that point on. The Lady Pioneers JV team did play with the Franklin for the rest of the game but the damage from the scoreless first period was just too much for the team to overcome. The halftime score displayed 19-7 and the game ended at the same 12 point margin of 36-24. The 36-24 defeat for the Lady Pioneers drops the team’s record to 9-4 (4-1 Mid-State) on the season. Leading the JV team in scoring was Kaydence Straneva with 9 points. Esther Brimmage contributed an additional 6 points in the victory. The Grizzly Cubs JV team will get some time off before they will play their next game on Thursday, January 15th when they travel to Roncalli to play the Lady Royals. The Lady Pioneers JV next game will be at home when they host the Lady Braves of Indian Creek on Tuesday, January 13th.
