The Lady Pioneers Girls JV team hosted the Lady Panthers of Bloomington South tonight at the Curry Center. The Lady Panthers have been a familiar non-conference opponent for the Lady Pioneers as the two teams have been playing each other since 2016. Recent success for the Lady Panthers Varsity team has helped the Lady Panthers JV team put together some very successful seasons where they easily defeated the Pioneers JV when the game was played. Last season was one of those games. The Lady Panthers JV team soundly defeated the Lady Pioneers 51-39. Throughout the first half, the Lady Pioneers struggled to handle the aggressive and persistent Bloomington South pressure all over the court. The Lady Pioneers were only able to score 3 and 5 points in the first and second quarter despite getting numerous chances around the basket. In contrast, Bloomington South calmly worked the ball around and found easy ways to score throughout the first half. Even when the Lady Panthers did miss their shots, they rebounded aggressively on any missed shot. The halftime score favored Bloomington South 21-8. The Lady Pioneers did finally get some offensive rhythm in the third quarter and slowly chipped away at the double digit Lady Panther lead by outscoring them 11-3 in the third quarter. The Lady Pioneers looked like they might really turn the game on its head when Esther Brimmage scored a layup at 4:45 and cut the Lady Panthers lead down to 3 at 21-24. Unfortunately from that moment on, the Lady Panthers went on a 12-3 for the last four minutes of the game and cruised to a 34-23 victory over Mooresville. The 34-23 loss for the Lady Pioneers improves the team’s record to 10-5 (4-1 Mid-State) on the season. The Lady Panthers JV team will return to the basketball court on Saturday morning to host the Lady Bears of Evansville Central. The next Lady Pioneers JV game will be after the Dr. Martin Luther King holiday and a journey across Indianapolis to play the Lady Marauders of Mt. Vernon HS.on Tuesday, January 20th.
