Pioneers Sweep South Putnam, Advance to Sectional Championship

The MHS girls tennis team traveled to Greencastle this afternoon to play South Putnam in the first round of the IHSAA sectional. The Pioneers turned in a strong performance, coming away with a 5-0 victory. For the Pioneers, Lyla Kaufman won at #1 singles, 6-1, 6-0. At #2 singles, Hailey Hoffman battled through two tight sets to win 7-6(7-4), 7-6(7-3). Savannah Walker added a win at #3 singles, 7-6(7-3), 6-1. In doubles action, Jacey Bell and Tori Shields won at #1 doubles, 6-0, 6-1, while Maelyn Cooper and Brooke Mitchell completed the sweep at #2 doubles with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. With the win, MHS improved to 9-10 overall and advanced to the sectional championship match. The Pioneers will face the winner of Greencastle and Martinsville tomorrow, Thursday, May 21, at 5:30 p.m., with introductions beginning at 5:15 p.m. The match will be a rematch of last year’s sectional final. :
