Pioneers Open 2026 Season with 5-0 Conference Win Over Martinsville

The Mooresville Pioneers Boys Tennis Team opened the 2026 season on Thursday with an impressive 5-0 varsity victory over Mid-State Conference rival Martinsville. The Pioneers also came away with a 3-1 victory at the JV level. At #1 singles, Sam Mommertz-Hijarrubia made his high school debut a memorable one, winning his first-ever high school match in convincing fashion, 6-2, 6-0. At #2 singles, senior captain Baylor Query got his season off to a strong start with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Baylor's performance also earned him the honor of being the Pioneers' first Varsity Player of the Match of the season. At #3 singles, Gavin Cooper turned in an outstanding performance, battling his way to a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 victory. The Pioneers were equally successful in doubles. At #1 doubles, seniors Ben Coffey and Grayson Furniss were pushed to the limit but responded when it mattered most, pulling out a three-set victory, 7-5, 2-6, 10-7. At #2 doubles, Wesley Hoffman and Max Springsteen played a strong match from start to finish, earning a 6-3, 6-1 victory to complete the varsity sweep. The JV Pioneers also had a successful start to their season. Sophomore Mason Galyan won at #1 JV singles, 6-3, while Traejen Asher earned a 6-2 victory at #2 JV singles. Traejen's performance earned him JV Player of the Match honors. At #3 JV singles, Xavier Browning picked up his first-ever tennis victory with a 6-4 win. The JV's lone loss came at #1 doubles, where Abram Haack and Eli Brown battled before falling 2-6. With the victories, the Mooresville varsity improves to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Mid-State Conference, while the JV also begins the season 1-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday, August 22, when they compete in the Franklin Invitational. Mooresville will open the tournament against Greenfield-Central at 10:00 a.m., followed by matches against Greenwood and host Franklin.
