The Mooresville Boys Tennis Team hosted the annual Mooresville Invitational today at the MHS tennis courts, welcoming Warren Central, Southport, and Linton-Stockton for a full morning of tennis. In first-round action, Linton-Stockton defeated Warren Central to advance to the championship match, while Mooresville earned its spot in the final with a 4-1 victory over Southport. The Pioneers picked up four straight-set victories against Southport. At #1 singles, Sam Mommertz turned in a strong performance with a 6-1, 6-0 win, while Baylor Query was equally impressive at #2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0. At #1 doubles, Ben Coffey and Gavin Cooper cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory, and Xavier Browning and Grayson Furniss completed the scoring at #2 doubles with a 6-2, 6-0 win. At #3 singles, Wesley Hoffman battled hard before falling 2-6, 4-6. The championship match featured Mooresville and Linton-Stockton, and the Pioneers once again came away with a 4-1 victory to capture the Mooresville Invitational championship. At #1 singles, Mommertz completed an outstanding day with a 6-4, 6-0 victory. Query also finished the day undefeated, battling through three sets at #2 singles to earn a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 win. Hoffman bounced back from his first-round loss with a strong performance at #3 singles, winning 6-0, 7-5. At #2 doubles, Browning and Furniss capped off an undefeated day together with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. In a very competitive match at #1 doubles, Coffey and Max Springsteen won the opening set before eventually falling in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6. With the two victories, the Pioneers improved their varsity record to 3-6 on the season. Mooresville will return to action on Tuesday, September 1, when the Pioneers travel to Bloomington North for a 5:30 p.m. matchup. It was a great day of tennis for the Pioneers, and the team would like to thank all of the parents and spectators who came out to support us. A special thank you goes to everyone who provided food and drinks throughout the day and helped make the invitational a success. We greatly appreciate everything our parents and fans continue to do for our players and our tennis program.
