The MHS boys tennis team traveled to Avon High School for a non-conference matchup with the Orioles. Avon was celebrating Senior Night and started seniors throughout its varsity lineup. Although Avon came away with a 7-0 varsity victory and a 1-0 win at the JV level, the Pioneers raised their level of play and made several matches extremely competitive. At #1 singles, Sam Mommertz battled hard before falling 4-6, 2-6. At #2 singles, Baylor Query pushed his opponent to a first-set tiebreak before falling 6-7 (2-7), 2-6. At #3 singles, Gavin Cooper played one of the closest matches of the evening, battling through three sets before falling 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 7-10. In doubles action, Ben Coffey and Grayson Furniss fell 3-6, 1-6 at #1 doubles. At #2 doubles, Wesley Hoffman and Xavier Browning got off to a strong start by winning the opening set before eventually falling in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 2-6. In JV action, Eli Brown competed at #1 JV singles. Although Eli fell in his match, he continues to make tremendous progress as he learns the game of tennis. The coaches appreciate his effort and improvement, as well as the effort shown by everyone who competed against Avon. With the losses, the Pioneers' varsity record moves to 5-9 on the season, while the JV record stands at 3-8-2. The Pioneers will now get a much-needed break for the remainder of the week and weekend before beginning a busy six-match week. MHS returns to action on Monday, September 14, when the Pioneers host Perry Meridian in a Mid-State Conference matchup.
