Pioneers Wrap Up Busy Week at Providence Invitational

By Mike Teders | Sep 20, 2026 11:57 AM

This weekend, the Mooresville Boys Tennis Team traveled to southern Indiana to face two talented teams at the Providence Invitational. In the first round, the Pioneers faced Barr-Reeve. Barr-Reeve was leading Mooresville 3-0 when play had to be suspended due to the extreme heat. Barr-Reeve had earned victories at #3 singles, #1 doubles and #2 doubles. Despite the team score, the Pioneers were battling in the remaining singles matches. At #2 singles, Baylor Query was leading his opponent 6-3, 5-3, deuce when play was stopped. At #1 singles, Sam Mommertz was down 2-5 in the opening set but was battling hard and looking to work his way back into the match. For the second match of the day, play was moved indoors to the Louisville Indoor Racquet Club, where Mooresville faced Providence. The Pioneers used a singles lineup that could provide a glimpse of what next season might look like, with Gavin Cooper at #1 singles, Wesley Hoffman at #2 singles and Traejen Asher at #3 singles. All three battled hard against a talented Providence lineup but came up short. At #1 doubles, Baylor Query and Sam Mommertz teamed up for an impressive 6-2, 6-0 victory. At #2 doubles, Grayson Furniss and Xavier Browning played a fun, enthusiastic match and competed hard throughout before falling to Providence 0-6, 2-6. After completing the busiest week of the season, the Pioneers are looking forward to getting back on the practice courts this week. Mooresville will close out the regular season with road matches at Indian Creek on Wednesday and Franklin on Thursday.
