Athlete of the Week – Girls Tennis – Lyla Kaufman, Sophomore Mooresville High School is proud to recognize Lyla Kaufman as this week’s Athlete of the Week for her outstanding start to the 2025 girls’ tennis season. Lyla, the Pioneers' #1 singles player, has opened the season with an impressive 4-0 overall record, including 1-0 in Mid-State Conference play. In those four matches, she has been dominant—winning 48 games while only dropping 2. Her consistent and commanding performances have set the tone for the entire team. This past Saturday, Lyla played a pivotal role in helping the Pioneers capture the championship at the Lawrence Central Invitational, showcasing not only her skill but also her competitive drive under pressure. As a team captain, Lyla leads with determination, setting a strong example for her teammates both on and off the court. Her poise, work ethic, and leadership are key ingredients in the team’s early success. The Pioneers look to keep the momentum going this week with upcoming matches against Danville, Decatur Central, and Indian Creek. Athlete(s) of the Week – Baseball – Hudson DeVaughan, Junior; Connor Cruz, Junior The Mooresville Pioneers Varsity Baseball team is off to a great start, with two standout pitchers helping to lead the way. Hudson DeVaughan and Connor Cruz had dominant performances on the mound during Wednesday night’s 6-2 victory over Mid-State Conference rival Martinsville. The win improved the Pioneers to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play, but what made the night special was the combined no-hitter tossed by DeVaughan and Cruz. Hudson DeVaughan earned the win as the starting pitcher, throwing three and a third innings of no-hit baseball. He allowed just one earned run, walked five, and struck out 10 batters. Every out DeVaughan recorded came via strikeout. Connor Cruz entered in relief in the top of the fourth inning with one out and didn’t miss a beat. He went on to throw three and two-thirds innings of hitless, scoreless baseball, allowing just one walk and striking out two to secure the save and complete the no-hitter. The duo’s performance helped the Pioneers stay perfect on the season. The Pioneers are back in action on Tuesday, April 15, when they travel to Decatur Central to face the Hawks. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
