The Mooresville Athletic Department is honored to partner with BJ Pendill to recognize the Mooresville High School student athlete of the week. Athlete of the Week: Cheer – Maelyn Cooper, Junior This week’s Female Athlete of the Week is Varsity Cheerleader Maelyn Cooper, whose dedication, leadership, and versatility stood out both in preparation and performance. Throughout the week, Maelyn worked closely with the Unified Cheer team, helping them develop their routine and giving them the confidence to shine during their first-quarter performance Friday night. She also spent time guiding the Junior Football League cheerleaders, teaching them new skills and preparing their routine, which they successfully executed during the second quarter. Her leadership extended beyond cheer. At halftime, Maelyn seamlessly transitioned to perform with the marching band, bringing energy and precision to their routine before returning to the sidelines to cheer with the Varsity team for the remainder of the game. From planning and teaching to leading and performing, Maelyn displayed passion, versatility, and teamwork at every step. She truly embodied what it means to be a Pioneer leader. Athlete of the Week: Soccer – Nolan Speaks, Freshman This week’s Male Athlete of the Week is freshman goalkeeper Nolan Speaks, who played a key role in leading the Boys Soccer team to a 2-1-1 record. Nolan recorded two shutouts during the week, including a 2-0 victory over Perry Meridian—the Pioneers’ first win over the Falcons in 11 years—and another strong performance in a shutout against Danville. He continued his standout play at the Shelbyville Tournament, where he blocked two penalty kicks in a shootout, helping secure a dramatic win over Shelbyville. As a freshman, Nolan has already made a huge impact between the posts and is proving to be a cornerstone of the Pioneers’ defense. His poise, determination, and skill highlight the bright future ahead for both him and the Boys Soccer program.
